If you Google the name “Sophie Forrest” there’s a good chance you will land on a web-page linking to lots of articles about the Australian actress Sophia Forrest, who was at some point in 2018 rumoured to be dating ex New Zealander actor Russel Crowe (Academy Award winning star of blockbuster film ‘Gladiator’), and who looks vaguely similar to a young Kelly (Jennie Garth) from the TV series ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’. If you Google “Beverly Hills 90210” you’ll know that this show was an incredibly successful teen drama that addressed topical "current" issues of the day such as sex, date rape, homophobia, animal rights, alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, eating disorders, antisemitism, racism, teenage suicide, teen pregnancy, and AIDS. This series took place over the span of 10 seasons between the years 1990 and 2000 - which was also the year ‘Gladiator’ was released. If you were a teenager yourself in the 1990’s you would certainly know 90210 was essential viewing and I heard there will soon be a “reboot” of 902010, although i don't know how i feel about that. Maybe a bit nostalgic and sad. On the other, when we fist heard the song “Cinnamon” by Sophie Forrest we thought we were hearing a "reboot" of another classic from a far away forgotten age: that time was the late 2000’s and the song being “Don’t Go” by an act called PUZIQUe. Another Google search will inform you that this track from 2007 was the result of a of an inspired collaboration between german producers Boys Noize and D.I.M and take our word for it when we tell you this track was pretty fucking massive upon it’s release - the soundtrack to dozens of end of night DJ marathons. Sophie Forrest on the other hand is Musician/Composer/DJ/Chef, who was born in South Africa and emigrated to Australia as a young child (maybe it was the 1990s?). She tells us her sound is inspired by soul, hip hop and jazz which are all evident to anyone with good ears on the two tracks present here as ‘Cinnamon’ and b side warm up tune ‘Empty Shop’. ‘Cinnamon’ hits us in all the same feels as Puzique’s late 2000’s classic. While not underpinned by that unforgettable Marvin Gaye sample that pleas with you to ‘Don’t Go’, we feel there is something about the rolling vibe of this epic almost 9 minute long groover that simply grabs onto you and won’t let go. Yeah.
